Negative Coal Impacts Proposal
Coal mining has many impacts on the health, environmental, and economic aspects of life. In eastern Kentucky, the primary source of income for many families was coal mining. The process of coal mining includes all trees and vegetation being removed. The earth is then blasted to expose visible coal. After the land has been destroyed, it is left to look distorted with no hope of being returned to its former glory. The Lexington Herald-Leader emphasized that this kind of mining causes negative health impacts on wildlife, water quality, and nearby communities. These mining projects have also led to landslides and flooding that have devastated the local populations.
Though coal mining caused all of these catastrophic impacts, it also provided Eastern Kentucky with stable jobs for decades. Poor policy changes removed these jobs from the people and left them with no alternatives. The policymakers had solutions that worked worldwide but not for the local community. We have some new solutions that can both solve the environmental problem and help the local community.
